Does Abortion Hurt?
When it comes to abortion, there’s a lot of conflicting information out there. It’s completely understandable that many young women find themselves asking, “Do abortions hurt?” It’s a valid question, and having accurate information can help you feel more prepared.
The reality is that abortion experiences vary. Pain levels depend on your body, your pain tolerance, and how far along the pregnancy is.

Understanding Abortion Types: Medical vs. Surgical
There are two main types of abortion: medical and surgical.¹
A medical abortion, often called the abortion pill, uses medications such as mifepristone and misoprostol to end a pregnancy. The FDA has approved this method for use up to 70 days from the first day of your last menstrual period.²
A surgical abortion is a procedure performed in a medical setting to remove pregnancy tissue from the uterus.³ These procedures are typically done after the first ten weeks of pregnancy.
How Painful Are Abortions?
So, do abortions hurt? There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer.
With medical abortions, experiences can range widely. Some women describe cramping and discomfort similar to a heavy period, while others experience stronger pain and heavier bleeding.
Surgical abortions are usually performed with anesthesia, so the procedure itself is not typically painful. However, cramping or soreness afterward is common. In general, the later the pregnancy, the more discomfort you may experience.
Pain varies from woman to woman and even from pregnancy to pregnancy. Your experience is unique to you.
What are the risks of abortion?
As with any medical procedure, abortion comes with potential risks. These can include infection, heavy bleeding, and—in rare cases—complications that require follow-up care.
Surgical abortions may involve risks such as incomplete abortion or injury to nearby organs, especially later in pregnancy. Anesthesia itself also carries risks.
Medical abortions are not always completely effective, meaning the pregnancy could continue. That’s why confirming your pregnancy beforehand is critical. Taking the abortion pill when you are not pregnant—or if the pregnancy is ectopic—can be dangerous and even life-threatening.⁴
Emotional Impact of Abortion
Abortion can also have emotional effects. It’s normal to experience a wide range of feelings before, during, and after an abortion.
Some women feel relief, while others experience sadness, grief, or guilt.⁵ There is no “correct” emotional response. Everyone processes the experience differently.
Support from trusted friends, family, or a post-abortion support professional can help you work through these feelings in a healthy way.
Is Abortion Legal in Michigan?
Abortion laws vary by state. In Michigan, abortion is legal and protected under state law. Both medical and surgical abortions are permitted.
This does not affect care for ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage, which are treated separately. A woman cannot be criminally or civilly penalized for obtaining an abortion in Michigan.
If you have questions about how the law applies to your situation, a care expert can help explain your options.
